Tropical Pen Kits

White Coconut Shell, Brown Coconut Shell, Mother of Pearl
and Green Abalone Pen Kits

Now you can make pens from real Mother of Pearl, abalone shell and white and brown coconut shell pen blanks.  Using a process that Berea developed thirteen years ago they have been able to modify several existing pen kits that will allow you to make pens from these beautiful exotic materials.

The parts of each kit have been modified from the original kits to accept the special shell and coconut blanks.  Each kit comes complete with the blanks.  The appropriate tube is already embedded into the material so all you have to do trim the blank to the length of the tube (using a pen mill or disk sander), mount the blank on the appropriate mandrel with the correct bushings and turn.

IMPORTANT: The shell and coconut blanks are covered by a special clear resin that is relatively easy to turn.  It is this resin that you turn down, sand and polish. We have made sure that there is a sufficient amount of clear resin over the shell and coconut. We highly recommend that those who purchase these kits have some experience in pen turning and/or spindle turning.  These kits/blanks are not recommended for beginners!  Replacement blanks of the shell and coconut are not available.  If you 'blow up' a blank we will not automatically replace it for you.

In addition, you should be aware that in spite of all possible precautions there may be a small bubble or bubbles in the clear resin.  In the rare case you should encounter a bubble the bubble hole can be filled with CA glue.

More useful information about Abalone and Mother of Pearl:

Abalone comes from the inside lining of the shell of the abalone mollusk. Mother of Pearl (MOP) is the inside lining of the pearl oyster shell. The MOP is made up of the same substance (nacre) as pearls. It is for this reason that MOP has the same luster, iridescence, and translucency as pearls.  Mother of Pearl has been used as a decorative substance for thousands of years. It is considered to be a beautiful and valuable thing used in expensive items. Mother of Pearl reflects light in different ways as it is moved providing an ever changing light show.

Shell comes in many colors including green.  Although there are abalone pearls the abalone is valued for its meat and shell.   Like Mother of Pearl abalone is a highly valued and beautiful decorative material.

What is the difference between the White and Brown Coconut ?

The coconut shell pen blanks are made from the inner hard kernel of the coconut - the part that contains the coconut meat. The white coconut comes from immature nuts while the brown comes from mature nuts.

MOTHER OF PEARL (MOP) AND ABALONE

Mother of Pearl is the inside lining of the pearl oyster shell. The MOP is made up of the same substance (nacre) as pearls. It is for this reason that MOP has the same luster, iridescence, and translucency as pears.

Mother of pearl has been used as a decorative substance for thousands of years; it is considered to be a beautiful and valuable thing used in expensive items. Mother of pearl reflects light in different ways as it is moved providing an ever changing light show.

Abalone also comes from the inside lining of the shell of the abalone mollusk. Abalone shell comes in many colors including green. Although there are abalone pearls the abalone is valued for its meat and shell. Like MOP abalone is a highly valued and beautiful decorative material.

Please note:
There are two different sizes of mandrels (shafts):  the A mandrel and the B mandrel.  The A mandrel is the same as a 7mm mandrel and can be used to turn kits from any of the kit suppliers.  The B mandrel, however, is larger in diameter and is used to turn some of the larger kits manufactured only by Berea Hardwoods.

Knowing what mandrel is required when ordering kits from us is easy to determine:  If the bushing number has a letter A in it (20A) then the A mandrel is required - if the bushing number has a letter B in it (16B) then the B mandrel is required.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
Jesus Christ and the American G.I.
One died for your soul and the other for your freedom.

A friend sent me the following:

What is a Veteran?   A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of up to and including his or her life.

Freedom Alliance
Supporting the continued education of children whose parents were killed in the line of Duty.

Lt. Colonel Oliver North, Founder and Honorary Chairman

The Mission of Freedom Alliance is to advance the American heritage of freedom by honoring and encouraging military service, defending the sovereignty of the United States and promoting a strong national defense.

Freedom Alliance , a 501(c)3 educational and charitable foundation, was founded in 1990 by Lt.Col Oliver L. North, who now serves as the organization's honorary chairman. We will work to "keep America strong, keep America prosperous, and keep America free," said North upon the founding of Freedom Alliance. And so we have.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.  He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.  When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?''  This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.  'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'  The man gestured, and the gate began to open.  'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.  'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.  As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.  'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'  'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.'  They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.  The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.  'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.  'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell.'  'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'
